​The Haunted Skyscraper

November 19, 2004 was one of the most infamous nights at the Union Trust. Many believe those involved were trapped within the Twilight Zone for several hours. It all begins on the 9 p.m. round as the guard entered the 4th floor. Stepping off the elevator he hears shuffeling from the back offices. He calls out into the darkness and no one answers. He hears it again, almost as if it's getting closer to him. Unable to galvanize the courage to walk alone into the darken offices, he decides to return to the lobby and regroup, grabbing his flashlight and radio. The elevator opens once again on 4, he steps out and hears the shuffle of paper and other movements for a second time. Calling out he still gets no one to respond. He decides to head to the lobby and call the police. The following is part of the 911 call.

 

911 dispatch.

Guard - I'm security at 205 Church Street and I think there's an intruder on the 4th floor. I keep calling out but there's no answer.

911 dispatch - Are you alone in the building?

Guard - Yes Sir.

911 dispatch - Cars are on the way, remain near the front doors so they can find you.

Guard - Yes Sir.

Several minutes pass before the first car arrives.

911 dispatch - Officers are at the front door now let them in.

Guard - Yes I see them thank you.

 

The guard goes to the door and lets the officer in as another car covers the back exit door. Officer asks the guard to wait until other units arrive. They talk for a few seconds when several NHPD cars arrive for some serious backup. Five officers talk to the guard and decide to head up to the 4th floor to check it out along with the security. When they arrive on 4 the officers hears a sound and checks the bathrooms with guns drawn. Calling out for any one in there to come out with their hands up, no response. They enter the bathroom seeing no one and continue to check the darken offices to be sure no one was there. As they walk to the A-Side they see the fire exit door open to the staircase. They asked the guard if this was common and he said yes, since lawyers use it to circumvent the busy elevators during the day. They then tell the guard to return to the lobby with the other officers so they can check the stairwell. What follows is radio traffic from that moment.

 

Officer A - I will take the stairwell down to the 3rd floor and you take it up to the 5th floor and lets see what happens.

Officer B - 10-4 on that.

Officer A - Umm, Officer B is that you in front of me ???

Officer B - No how can it be I'm now on 5 !!

Officer A - Someone just walked around the corner in front of me and opened the door!

Officer B - Coming back down to you.

Officer A - I need some backup there's someone here !!

 

At that moment all hell breaks out. At least 10 more police cars arrive along with the NHFD with nightvision cameras and two K-9 Units.

 

Officer A - I'm looking all around I can't see anyone !! Elevators have not moved.

Dispatch - All doors and exits are covered.

Officer B - 10-4 I'm with Officer A and we can't find any trace of someone, checking all offices now.

Officer A - I know I saw and heard someone and the door opened! It's so heavy.

 

After a complete search of the 3rd, 4th and 5th floors no one was found..........All the officers upstairs return to the lobby to the sound of barking dogs and the crackle of police and fire radios. Then came the decision to split up into two seperate search groups, one starting in the basement and the other on the roof in hopes of trapping them in the middle. While also keeping the lobby and all exits covered. At this point there are police on the roof of the near by building and on the New Haven Green keeping watch. The two teams now set out each with a K-9 unit to put this to an end. Only they did not know, the night had just begun!

 

The first team goes with the guard to the roof and the other begins within the basement. The dogs are ready and willing to find who ever is hiding. The elevator reaches the 11th floor and the door opens. The K-9 heads right to the ladies bathroom. Sniffing and clawing trying to get under the door. The police yell out " police come out now or we are sending the dogs in " No responce, but the dog continues to whine and scratch along the door. The police yell out one more time " police come out now or we will let the dog in " Again, nothing from inside. The officer swings the door open and the shepard runs in finding no one.....The police look at each other and said " that never happened before. " Now they reach the 9th floor and just as they exit the elevator they all hear a huge crashing sound to their right. They set the dog free and the officers follow. Again, nothing. The K-9 officer says to the rest " we all heard that sound right?? " All agreed they did. The basement search party and the roof search party all meet in the center of the building finding no one.....They decide to regroup once more in the lobby and try again. As they are all standing there, suddenly the police radio screams out from the officer watching from the green " there's a huge guy standing in the window within the bank looking out at us " The guard had to get the keys to open the heavy brass door to enter the bank ( which was alarmed ) and then all the police and K-9's run into the bank to find no one !!! Again they regroup in the lobby in complete loss for what's is going on. Then one officer speaks up and says " what if what we are dealing with is not human? " The look on the officers faces said it all. They knew what they were dealing with, but had no idea how to write such a report. After several hours they surrender finding no intruder.  It was believed by most that night all had reported for duty in the Twilight Zone.

 

December 16, 2004 at 2:00 a.m. the guard working the midnight to eight shift was sitting in the lobby, when he heard the door slam on the second floor in the lobby stairwell. He checked to find no one. This happend not long after the assistant building manager heard the same thing late in the night.

 

December 23, 2004 at 12:30 p.m. the guard was in the basement near the bathroom, when he looked to my right towards the boiler room and saw a huge dark shadow of a man standing half visable in the doorway. Part of him was behind the wall, the other exposed where he could see. It was so clear he was sure someone was there. But, no one was. The image was at least 10 feet tall. According to the crew at TAPS this is demonic.

 

January 21- 23, 2005 Blizzard hits the northeast which dumped between 6" to 16" across the state and up to 22" in Boston. The guard was in the lobby in the early evening when he turned and saw a human like, grey figure float off the freight elevator towards the desk.

 

April 2005 the secretary on the 4th floor came down and told me when she was working in her office the week before, she looked up at the mirror facing her desk and saw the image of a man walk by. She was able to see the arms very clearly. She thought, my boss is back already???? But as she got up to enter the conferance room, no one was there. Then that same week, a lawyer working on the 3rd floor aroud 10:00 p.m. saw the image of a ghost.

 

May 2, 2005 at 8:34 p.m. heavy rain. The head cleaning lady was completing her duties for the night, when she remembered she had to empty the trash in one of the offices on 4. As she opened the office dooor, she heard a lady talking and a baby crying. She was surprised people were still in the office. So, she came down to ask the guard if he saw the tenants of that office leave. He said yes, about two hours ago. Then she told him what she heard. So, he went up with her to check. When they got to the 4th floor, there was not a sound. When she pointed to the door she entered, he said oh no!! That's the same door I've heard people talking late at night when no one was there. So, they both enter the office to find no one. Then that same night at 8:49 PM, the guard was doing the round in the basement when Iheheard a door slam! No one was there.

 

May 20, 2005 at 8:30 p.m. the cleaning lady was on the 10th floor when she heard a person typing, but no one was there. She got so scared she ran down three floors to get away.

 

May 21, 2005 at 1:30 p.m. the guard was sitting in the lobby reading the paper, when all of a sudden he heard this awful scream from within the building. It was unreal! It gave him chills. It was a males voice, as if he was being tortured. The overnight guard said he hears a woman's scream coming from the basement about once a year.

 

May 26, 2005 at 1:30 p.m the assistant manager, John and the guard were all in the lobby, while the building manager was in the boiler room toilet. As he was washing his hands, he heard two men talking to each other outside the door. He thought, who the hell let these guys down here? When he opened the door, the voices stopped and no one was there. He came up and asked us if we allowed any people in the basment?? They said of course not. They all felt really spooked.

 

Mid September 2005 the midnight guard was sitting in the lobby when he heard the hallway door slam! He said this has been going on for a while. He waits for someone to come down the stairs, but they never do. This really creeps him out. Only a few nights later, the other guard was talking with the new cleaning guy. He's from Mexico. He started telling the guard how nervous he gets working on the 5th floor. The guard asked him why? He said "several times while going about my duties, I hear my name called. It would say PEREZ !! I say yes? But no one was ever there."

 

October 7, 2005 at 3:45 p.m. as the guard was talking in the lobby with an old friend, the assistant manager and the parkade guard ( who was helping the assistant manager with some chairs in the basement) came up on the elevator white and in shock. The assistant was nervous and shaken as he told them what happend below. The assistant was coming out of the compressor room with the guard, as he walked through the doors, he saw a man walk by the elevator and right into the bathroom. He called out, "who goes there??" Thinking it was the guard, since he was the only other person who could be down there. When the assistant manager and the guard got no answer, they checked to see who walked in the bathroom. No one was there!! They felt chills when he told them this, since the guard had the same thing happen, after coming out of the compressor room. Both were shaken by this encounter.

 

October 24, 2005 at 6:30 p.m. the guard was in the bathroom in the boiler room when he heard a man talking. He thought to myself, oh good the assistant left the radio down here. Then, as he turned to wash his  hands, he no longer heard the voice. He stood silent for a moment to make sure, and nothing. He said, well I'll go check the room. When he left the bathroom, there was no radio. He said to himself, "WOW" that was wild. He heard a mans voice talking right on the other side of the door.

 

December 8, 2005 at 7:30 p.m. the building manager was in the basement when he was overcome by a powerful smell of cigarettes. He called out to his assistant if he was smoking, and then saw he was not. The smell of smoke lingers within the area where the old guard who passed away many years ago use to take his smoke break. The manager said this has happened many times before, and always around December.

 

December 27, 2005 at 1 a.m. The assistant manager was doing the midnight shift. He went into the freight elevator after locking all six lobby doors, and shutting off all but one elevator. No one could get in, and no one could leave. He did a round so he knew the building was empty. At 1 a.m. he took a break in the freight elevator. The lobby lights were now off. As he rested, he heard banging in the lobby. He then heard the lock being opened from one of the inside lobby doors. He jumped up, ran into the lobby to find nothing but darkness. No one was there. He checked the lobby doors, and all six were locked. You see, you can't unlock the inside doors, and then lock them from the outside. So, he knew it was all clear. He then returned to the freight, when a few moments later he heard someone in the lobby again. He jumped up once more, to find no one there. The next morning he told the guys it was one of the oddest things to ever happen to him in the building.

 

Early March 2006 at 12:45 p.m. the building manager and his two assistants were in the basement having a meeting near the compressor room, when they saw someone walk by the sidewalk elevator, towards the phone room. They picked up an iron rod, and walked down there to see who it was. When they looked, no one was there. There's no escape down there, you have to walk back up the hall to get out. This has happened several times in that location.

 

May 18, 2006 at 8p.m. the building manager was on the phone in the basement, when he heard the sound of someone hitting the wall next him. It sounded like they had a huge hammer, trying to break a hole in the wall. He called upstairs and asked if the electricians came yet. The guard said no, no one has arrived yet. The assistant manager and his new partner Bill were up on 11 when he heard this banging. It should be noted, that 24 hours before one of the guards passed away.

 

June 12, 2006 at 6:30 p.m, one of the new lawyers on the 4th floor was working late. They have three offices that are joined. He was alone, working on some papers. He then felt someone was in the other room, he looked and no one was there. He went back to his papers, and had the same feeling again. He looked and no one. As he sat back down at his desk, he got chills. Then, he felt someone breath down his neck. At that point he left the office for the night, telling the guard "I don't know how you guys can work the nightshift here."

 

June 26, 2006 the guard and his buddy were in the basement around 9 p.m. when they decided to try and make contact with the spirits. The guards buddy called out his name and got a ghosly and ominous responce. " you are a liar "

 

August 14, 2006 at 2 p.m. John who works in the bank, went into the basement with the assistant manager to get some water. When the freight elevator opened, they saw a large bright light flash by them, heading towards the bathroom. They could feel the heat and energy as it passed by. Then, at 5 p.m, the guard was in the basement. He had no idea what happened at 2 p.m, since he was not able to talk to the guys until the next day. As he was walking by the compressor door, he saw an object fly out from the bathroom. It was very fast. These balls of energy have been seen many times in this area, often around the basement bathroom.

 

September to October 2006. There has been a sudden surge in paranormal activity within the lobby late at night. Two guards on the overnight shift the past several weeks, have been taunted by having their names called. The assistant manager takes his break around 2 a.m. He turned off all the lights, locked all six doors and shut off all elevators. He then was taking a little rest when he heard his named called! The same has happened to the other overnight guard, who heard his name called this past Monday night at about 2 a.m. There has also been activity regarding the tower doors on the roof. This door leads to the spiral staircase which spins to the tower. The building manager told his assistant to lock the door and place the key in the managers office which only the manager can open. No one has the key to the pad locks. Well, a few weeks later, the assistant walks up to the tower door and sees it's open. He asked his boss if he opened it and he said no, and to make sure you lock it this time. Well, he made sure and a few weeks later it was found open again. They both decided to change the lock and tie the door shut from the inside and then walk up to the other level to get out. Just for the record, you can't get to the other level without first getting through the tower door. Well, a few weeks pass and the assistant walks up to check the door and it's open! It was untied from the inside!! A few weeks later, the guard went up there with his recorder. He asked "Is there something you would like to say?" And a few seconds after you can hear footsteps.

 

October 20, 2006 the guard working the 4 p.m. to 12 midnight shift completed his rounds at 9:30 p.m. About 10 p.m, he was sitting at the desk starting to nod off, when he was suddenly startled by the feeling someone was standing over him. Looking around, no one was there.

 

October 23, 2006 at about 9 p.m. the guard was locking up in the bank in complete drakness, when he walked by one of the old office doors in the back halls of the bank. As he walked by, he heard a group of people talking within the office. he opened the door fast to find no one.

 

December 4, 2006 at 11:10 p.m. One of the employee's of the bank was warming up his car in the middle of the parkade at 11:10 p.m. As he was sitting there, he looked into his rearview mirror and saw a man running up behind his car. He looked to the left and then to the right. Not being able to see him, he had this awful feeling he was sneaking up along side of the car. Not being able to see anyone, he put the car into drive and headed towards the backdoor. As he looked, no one was there. There was no chance someone could just vanish, since he was way into the parkade. He left feeling very spooked.

 

December 8, 2006 the bank manager was in the basement locking up the vault for the night, when he heard a huge bang on the wall next to him. He knew he was alone and looked all around him seeing no one. Then, as he was about to walk out of the vault area, he heard scratching on the wall. At that moment he said he became a believer !!

 

Feb 12, 2007 at 11pm. the guard was in the parkade warming up my truck. While sitting there, he was trying to call the guard in the lobby. When he looked over at the back door, he saw someone walk towards the back door from the inside! But, no one was there.

 

Feb 19, 2007 at 8:48 p.m. the guard was walking on the 6th floor when he heard his name called. He checked the office to find no one. It said "Joseph"

 

Feb 22, 2007 at 9:40 p.m. the guard at the desk saw a tall, dark figure walk on the freight elevator while it was parked in the basement. He saw it as he glanced down at the camera.

 

March 10, 2007 at 1:30 p.m. the guard was in the basement talking on the phone. As he was looking at the bathroom door which was open, he saw a bright, round light. Then it vanished and appeared again. All of a sudden, it darted like lighting into the freight elevator. It was so wild to see. This area is very active with amazing paranormal activity. From apparitions to orbs of energy seen with the eye.

 

April 9, 2007 at 3 a.m. the night watchman was sitting in the lobby with the lights out when he heard someone walking down the lobby staircase. He stopped what he was doing at the desk to listen very close. He then heard the walking once again. He got up an investigated the staircase to find no one.

 

June 25, 2007 at 9 p.m. the guard was on the upper floors inpsecting if all the furniture was moved out. He then took the freight elevator to the lobby. At this point, he encountered a lady who was waiting for a ride. She asked him, "who has a baby?" He said "there's no baby here." She then told him, "I've been standing here for about 15 mins or so and I kept hearing a baby cry on and off." "I even walked outside and no one was there." He said, "wow that's odd." He knew the building was empty and for sure there was no crying baby. But, remember the reports about this on the 4th floor and as always, no baby was found.

 

July 26, 2007 at 2 a.m. the night watchman was walking through the darkness of the bank when he heard a door slam. He stopped and listened and heard it again! He said it scared the hell out of him. But after checking no one was there. He then left the bank fast and headed for the lobby.

 

July 30, 2007 as a full moon loomed over the Union Trust, the guard was walking towards the lobby from within the bank around 8:15 p.m. when he heard one of the cleaners in the lobby moving buckets and such. As he walked through the brass door he noticed no ones was there! Then at 10:40 p.m. he was in the lobby and feeling very uneasy about the energy within the building. IHethen said, "if someone is here could you give me a sign?" Within 5 seconds the pile of mail which was sitting on the lobby desk slammed to the floor!!! It was obvious he got his answer.

 

August 13, 2007 at 3:30 a.m. the watchman working the nightshift decided to lay back in the chair in the lobby to get a little rest before dawn. While he was resting his head on the side of the chair, he felt someone blow into his ear! He jumped and looked around seeing no one. Then he closed his eyes again and within 15 mins or so he felt someone blowing into his ear once more! He was left feeling very uneasy and unable to get some needed rest.

 

September 23, 2007 at 5:00 a.m. the night watchman was reading the morning paper at the lobby desk when he heard someone shaking keys in the lobby stairwell. He put the paper down and listened close once more and heard the key sound again. At that very moment the pile of mail on the desk next to him was tossed to the floor!! He jumped up in fear and was ready to dash out of the building when he calmed himself down. Of course no one was in the lobby but him. What's amazing the mail thing happened to the other guard on July 30, 2007. Another dawn rises for the Union Trust.
